If the thought of renovating your kitchen fills you with both excitement and dread, you are not alone. With so many options for fittings, fixtures and finishes, it is easy to feel overwhelmed.
One of the most important decisions is the benchtop. Getting it right often helps define the look of the rest of the room.
Start with how you use the kitchen
Work out what the space is mainly used for and how often. If you rarely cook, you can choose a beautiful surface without worrying too much about how delicate it is. If the kitchen is used every day, durability and performance matter as much as looks, so choose a hard-wearing surface that resists stains, heat and scratches.
Choose a colour you will live with
Colour is a personal choice and depends on the look you want. Whites and light tones are a safe choice that will not date. Bolder colours can work beautifully, but consider them alongside your cabinetry and flooring so everything sits well together.
Weigh up quality and durability
Benchtops are among the most used surfaces in any home, so it pays to do it once and do it well. Compare quality, durability, colour and how easy the surface is to care for before you decide.
Consider thickness and edges
Thickness and edge detail change the look of a benchtop. Thick mitred edges with deep aprons create a solid statement, while thinner profiles feel sleek and are often more budget friendly.

Carry the surface further
The same material can be used beyond the benchtop – for splashbacks, shelves, serveries, kickboards and window sills – for a seamless look. In open-plan homes it can even continue into dining or living furniture.
Mix materials with care
Combining surfaces such as natural stone, timber and porcelain adds interest and depth. The key is choosing materials that complement each other rather than compete.
